Linda
Algotsson reigns supreme on home ground
2003
FEI Eventing World Cup Champion Linda Algotsson won
a brilliant victory at the 11th FEI Eventing World
Cup qualifier held in Malmö (SWE) from 16 to
18 July. Riding her very own 11-year old gelding Fair
Dobbin, she finished on the impressive result of 46.4
penalties. Linda was in 4th position after the first
day of competition, despite a fine Dressage test (44
penalties), but a clear Cross Country (2.4 time penalties)
followed by a clear Jumping round made her the convincing
leader more than 10 points ahead of runner-up fellow
countrywoman Viktoria Carlerbäck.
This
victory secures Linda 100 FEI Eventing World Cup points
which, added to her previous performances in Luhmühlen,
GER (60 points) and Strzegom, POL (30 points), place
her as the firm leader of the standings with 190 points,
well ahead of Germany's Andreas Dibowski (134 points)
and Darren Chiacca of the USA (123 points). Please

Frenchman Yann Candele Claims Second Consecutive Victory
at the Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament
Ottawa,
Ontario --- After winning Saturday's $35,000 Jumping Derby,
Yann Candele of France claimed his second consecutive victory
at the Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament, held July
13-18 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa,
ON, by winning the $75,000 'Big Ben Memorial' Grand Prix.
Candele,
a native of Normandy, France, qualified two horses for the
jump-off, but the first one into the grand prix ring got
the job done. Riding the 10-year-old Belgian-bred Mill Creek
Marco Taere, Candele efficiently completed the shortened
jump-off track set by Canadian course designer Danny Foster
in a time of 52.21 seconds to overtake the lead. His performance
would prove to be the winning one as none of the other eight
jump-off challengers could even come close to his time.

Samsung
Super League 2004 - All Eyes On Italy At Hickstead..........
The
All England Jumping Course at Hickstead hosts the
sixth leg of the 2004 Samsung Super League series
on Friday next and, with just one further round remaining
before the Final in Barcelona in September, the pressure
is intensifying at the lower end of the league table.
The
Italians had a disastrous outing in Aachen last week
and now lie four points behind the Irish in bottom
position. The question is, can Chef dEquipe
Duccio Bartalucci once more find the inspirational
drive that rescued his side from relegation at the
end of the 2003 series? It seems like a tall order
but Italian courage in the face of adversity should
never be under-estimated.
The
French are back in control at the head of affairs
but less than two points separate them from Germany
in second place while The Netherlands is next in line
almost four points further behind. Please

Samsung
Super League 2004 - German Victory Sends Out A Warning..........
The
reigning Olympic and European champions from Germany
claimed the latest leg of the 2004 Samsung Nations
Cup series on their home ground in Aachen today, sending
out a strong signal of confidence and determination
ahead of next months Olympic Games in Athens.
Aachen
has long been considered the Mecca of the show jumping
world the place where every team and every
individual wants to do their very best and
course-designer Frank Rothenbergers track tested
them with 12 big fences, light poles and clever layout.
While problems were spread all around the course the
line from the oxer at fence five to the combination
at fence six proved the bogey of the day, but having
shared pole position with the USA, Belgium and Holland
carrying eight faults after the first round, the German
squad added nothing further to win without calling
out their final rider. Please

BHS
Ragwort Action Week gets under way
The
British Horse Society's (BHS) Ragwort Action Week
takes off on Monday (19 July), following hot on the
heels of the first ever code of practice on how to
prevent the spread of Ragwort, so deadly to horses
and other grazing animals.
Quick off the mark was Radio 4's favourite farming
programme, The Archers. Poor Alice has discovered
that her pony, Chandler, has liver failure and the
suspected cause is Ragwort poisoning. Alice has been
advised to have Chandler put down to end his suffering,
a story that echoes a report received by the BHS only
this week of yet another horse dying from the consequences
of ingesting Ragwort, one of five plants named in
the Weeds Act 1959.Please

BHS
in Industry concern over Riding School insurance premiums
The
British Horse Society (BHS), ABRS and representatives
of the insurance industry met Defra minister Alun
Michael today (15 July) to discuss the increasing
burden of insurance premiums falling on equestrian
establishments.
|
BHS
Chief Executive Graham Cory told the minister that, in an
industry operating on such tight margins, premium hikes
can mean the difference between solvency and failure. And
if riding schools continue to decline in number then eventually
this will deprive the UK of top-level competitors.
